It started as a conversation among three friends with a vision—not just to serve coffee, but to spark something bigger. For Darren Spicer, that spark came from years of experience in the coffee industry, rising through the ranks and seeing both the potential and the pitfalls of the drive-thru coffee model. He didn’t just want to launch another coffee brand—he wanted to redefine the customer experience entirely. The result was CLUTCH Coffee Bar, a company built on speed, quality, human connection, and a guiding mantra: We exist to serve positive energy.
As CEO and co-founder, Darren has led CLUTCH from a single-store concept to a $15 million-a-year enterprise with 17 locations across the Carolinas—and plans to scale to 50, then 100. But what makes CLUTCH stand out isn’t just growth—it’s culture. “Almost everyone says they care about culture, but few build it into their daily operations,” Darren says. “From day one, we focused on creating a place where both customers and employees feel something different—something real.”
That authenticity is the foundation of CLUTCH’s success. In contrast to larger coffee chains where interactions can feel scripted, CLUTCH encourages its team members to be themselves. This freedom creates a genuine connection at the window, turning customers into loyal fans and employees into ambassadors. “Customer service is a lost art, and we are leading the charge on bringing back incredible service.” Under Darren’s leadership, CLUTCH has created over 600 jobs and fostered a work environment where growth and mentorship are part of the mission. From writing college recommendation letters to helping employees network in their dream industries, Darren ensures CLUTCH is a launchpad—not just a job.
CLUTCH also leads the pack in product innovation. Sourcing beans from a national award-winning roaster, CLUTCH delivers premium quality in every cup. “You can’t say that about the bigger brands. Most roast their own beans due to scale, and that’s where the quality drops off,” Darren notes. But CLUTCH doesn’t stop at coffee. The menu includes a proprietary energy drink, a 100% juice line, and the Muscle Mocha—an espresso-infused protein shake that’s become a customer favorite and industry standout.
Darren’s entrepreneurial journey is rooted in both insight and intention. His time helping open de novo locations for other brands gave him a front-row seat to what the drive-thru coffee world needed—and what it was missing. CLUTCH was born out of that opportunity: to create something better, to build a brand that blends operational excellence with heart.
