Gregory Davis
In the rapidly evolving landscape of renewable energy, Gregory Davis, founder and CEO of Clean Urban Living, is at the forefront of innovation and community advocacy. With a specialization in pop-up retail for contractors, community access, public relations, and marketing, Gregory has leveraged his expertise to create a transformative program that brings education and access to marginalized communities across the United States.
Gregory began his career focused on selling solar products nationwide. His trajectory took a pivotal turn in Atlanta, Georgia, when Georgia Power introduced a net-metering program limited to the first 5,000 customers. Net metering, where utilities buy back excess solar-generated energy at retail prices, is crucial for solar adoption. However, Gregory noticed a stark disparity: while affluent neighborhoods were well-informed and competitive in securing the benefits, lower-income and marginalized communities, particularly African American and Hispanic areas, were left in the dark.
"I’d be the fifth, sixth, seventh person affluent homeowners talked to, but in lower-income areas, I was often the first. This lack of information and access sparked a fire in me," Gregory recalls. This realization became the catalyst for his mission to democratize clean energy access.
In 2018, Gregory founded Clean Urban Living in Arizona, with a clear mission: to bring clean energy products, services, and education to everyone. The company’s innovative retail program places clean energy solutions in accessible locations like Walmart, ensuring that solar windows, doors, and other products reach all communities. Unlike traditional solar companies that may overlook marginalized groups, Clean Urban Living focuses on inclusivity, ensuring no community is left behind.
Clean Urban Living’s partnerships with major retailers like Walmart and SIMON Malls are central to its success. "Walmart doesn’t deal directly with solar companies, but we have the exclusive ability to place products there, as well as other retail locations," Gregory explains. This strategic move places solar solutions directly within reach of diverse communities nationwide.
The impact of this approach is substantial. To date, Clean Urban Living has collaborated with over 70 companies, positioning their products in nearly 100 Walmarts nationwide, with projections to expand beyond 100 locations by the end of the year. Additionally, their partnership with SIMON Malls will soon see 15 new locations, further broadening their reach.
Clean Urban Living goes beyond sales; it is a staunch advocate for clean energy education. The company’s program educates marginalized communities about the benefits of energy efficiency and renewable solutions, addressing the informational void that often exists in these areas. By doing so, they empower individuals to make informed decisions about adopting solar energy, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future.
Gregory and Clean Urban Living exemplify the power of innovation combined with a commitment to social justice. By integrating clean energy solutions into mainstream retail environments, Gregory ensures that all communities, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to the tools and information necessary to embrace renewable energy.
