Michael Burwick credits his success to living a balanced life. As an attorney, a philanthropist and a married father of three, Michael explains that there are three parts to the triangle in his balanced life: work, family, and civic engagement. In Michael’s world, he makes a constant, ongoing effort to pay attention to each of these three aspects and, by doing so, that is what makes his life a successful one.
As a student, Michael was very focused on his education and he concentrated on public policy, law, and finance as his areas of study. He received a B.A. in sociology from Boston University and went on to earn his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. He additionally received two LL.M. degrees from Georgetown Law; one LL.M. in securities law and financial regulation and a second LL.M. in taxation.
In 1995, Michael began his legal career as an assistant attorney general and he later served as legal counsel to several committees in the United States House of Representatives. He then founded a tax and securities practice that led him to become general counsel and chief compliance officer for a mid-sized broker-dealer and registered investment adviser.
In September 2018, he joined the Wagner Law Group as a securities and tax attorney where he concentrates on tax and securities law with a sub-focus on real estate securities, securities litigation, ERISA, and general corporate work. He advises clients on how best to comply with the rules and regulations promulgated by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, as well as the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Labor.
The Wagner Law Group was founded in 1996 and, while it is a boutique law firm, it is nationally recognized as one of the top ERISA, employee benefits, employment law, human resources law, and executive compensation firms in the country. Michael attributes the firm’s distinction, its culture, ethos and unceasing focus on excellence to its founder, Marcia Wagner, whom he also considers a mentor, “ERISA is one of most complicated areas of the law. Marcia and her team are the best and the brightest in the industry – they are a highly knowledgeable team of experts who take their work very seriously in this and all other areas in which the firm concentrates.”
In addition to his professional achievements, Michael is heavily involved in several charitable organizations. He has been a member of the board of directors of Autism Speaks for the past five or six years and he was recently nominated to be the next chairman of the board for the New England chapter of Autism Speaks.
To complete his triangle of success, Michael loves to spend time with his wife, Nicole Greene Burwick, an accomplished fashion designer, and his three children, Rachel Bee, Spencer Benjamin, and Henri Babette. Playing sports and attending Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics games feature prominently.
Before meeting Nicole, Michael was a single father to twin five-year-olds and their sole caregiver. It was an extremely challenging time for him, trying to juggle his home life and professional responsibilities. He believes that all life experiences should be considered learning experiences and he lives by the motto, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
