We spoke with him to learn more about his career, his goals, and his vision for the future.
Patrick, you’re a passionate advocate of clean energy, and a respected thought leader and successful entrepreneur in this space. What drew you to this field, and why is it so important to you?
I was born in a West Virginia coal mining town and witnessed firsthand the hardships when coal reserves dwindled and jobs disappeared. This experience drives everything I do—I don’t want anyone else to face that situation. During college, I worked for the Park Service and met the Reagans, which led to a stint at the White House. I was inspired when President Carter installed solar panels, thinking we were on the brink of transitioning from oil to solar. Although Reagan removed them, this experience set me on a path to champion renewable energy and build a resilient economy.
Nearly 20 years ago, I shifted from technology to environmental technology. Having worked in data, I saw the evolution of technology and clean energy. Initially dominated by utilities, the field began attracting people who wanted to control their costs. Many companies had a passion for solar, but lacked business acumen. With both passion and business skills, my friends and I founded our first solar company, determined to make a difference.
Tell us a bit more about your nonprofit, the U.S. Solar Coalition?
We noticed significant gaps in the infrastructure rollout and knew we could make a difference. Our initiatives include integrating renewable energy topics into science curricula to educate children, advocating for workforce education, and facilitating the transition with siting and permitting solutions. Additionally, our inclusive financing program helps individuals struggling with utility bills by advocating on their behalf and collaborating with utilities to develop innovative solutions. Our mission is to normalize renewable energy adoption and empower communities through education and practical support initiatives.
What is the most common challenge companies face in transitioning to clean energy and ESG? How are you helping them make the shift and reap the benefits?
Many companies hesitate to invest in environmental controls, fearing it will drain capital and reduce competitiveness. My role is to demonstrate that these investments lead to long-term savings, operational resilience, and litigation prevention. Neglecting clean energy and ESG practices weakens companies, as seen with vulnerable coastal oil refineries facing increasing hurricane risks. My mission is to show companies that integrating sustainability isn't just about profit—it builds resilient communities and fosters long-term profitability. I encourage them to focus on the triple bottom line, the three P’s: People, Planet, and Profits. Workers and communities are as important as profit margins.
Let’s end with a look at the future. Would you consider joining or helming another company?
Absolutely! I'm committed to leveraging my experience to make a meaningful impact and would love to join a company dedicated to helping consumers and advancing sustainable practices. Having succeeded as an entrepreneur and corporate leader, I can guide companies in shaping their market approach, nurturing their teams, and driving growth. My goal is to lead and inspire organizations to embrace sustainability, achieve lasting success, and build a resilient economy that benefits everyone.
