Darren Wiebe, P.Eng., MBA, PMP
In the heart of western Canada, Darren Wiebe is shaping the future of infrastructure management. As the founder and CEO of ASI Engineering, a leading asset management firm based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Darren has built a company that’s bridging the gap between policy and practice and revolutionizing how organizations approach aging infrastructure.
Darren’s career is marked by a progression that began humbly and evolved into leadership. He started as a technician in road work, gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges in infrastructure maintenance. He expanded his expertise from there, working for major utility companies across Canada and the United States. Following, he moved into a leadership role as the director of asset management for the government of Saskatchewan, which provided him with valuable insights into the strategic allocation of public funds to address aging infrastructure—a challenge he believes is reaching a critical point.
“Our infrastructure is at a key moment in history,” Darren explains. “We’re dealing with physical assets 70 to 80 years old, and owners must decide whether to repair, refurbish, or replace them. I founded ASI Engineering to transform how these decisions are made, to bring a new approach grounded in practicality and precision.”
Founded in 2023, ASI Engineering offers a holistic approach to asset management. They handle projects from conception to completion, assessing asset data and conducting thorough condition assessments, developing capital programs, and guiding clients through the entire process—from securing budget approvals to overseeing field execution. Further, their services extend beyond technical advice; ASI Engineering becomes a partner in decision-making and provides customized solutions that align with each client’s unique needs.
“At ASI Engineering, we’re not a traditional engineering company that creates designs for new construction,” Darren emphasizes. “We are out there in the field and alongside our clients, using our instruments and analytical skills, assessing the condition of aging infrastructure firsthand. We’re field engineers, which allows us to make informed, hands-on decisions.”
With his background in engineering, asset management, and project management, holding certifications as a professional engineer, PMP, and corrosion technologist, Darren has cultivated an approach that blends rigorous technical analysis with on-the-ground practicality. His academic credentials, including an MBA and a Bachelor of Applied Science, further underscore his comprehensive expertise.
ASI Engineering’s work is grounded in the belief that a well-functioning society depends on the safety and quality of its infrastructure—the buildings we live and work in, the roads we drive on, and the electrical systems we rely on. This philosophy drives Darren’s passion for training the next generation of engineers. He takes pride in teaching new engineers the importance of field experience and practical application of engineering principles. One of Darren’s areas of focus is educating university students about the significance of asset management and integrating its principles into their future careers.
Darren Wiebe’s vision for ASI Engineering goes beyond providing engineering services; it’s about making a difference in the communities he grew up in and changing how organizations manage their infrastructure. By staying rooted in the field, understanding the nuances of each project, and delivering tailored solutions, ASI Engineering is poised to lead the way in reshaping the future of infrastructure management in Canada.
