As a physician, mother of four, and founder of Elle, MD, Dr. Jennifer Johnston understands firsthand the urgent need for safer, more accessible contraception. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis—a condition that may have been linked to her long-term hormonal contraceptive use—she began to question the limited options available to women seeking effective birth control without sacrificing their health.

 

Drawing from her clinical background in family medicine and personal experience, Dr. Johnston launched Elle, MD with a bold mission: to empower women and girls to access contraception without compromise. At the heart of this mission is the Better Ring—a non-hormonal vaginal contraceptive ring made with copper, a proven spermicidal agent. Designed to be worn monthly and easily removed, the Better Ring offers an innovative alternative to hormone-based options and surgeries, without the side effects commonly associated with traditional methods.

 

Dr. Johnston leads the company as CEO, guiding its vision, securing funding, and building a team committed to transforming the contraceptive landscape. Elle, MD also aims to pursue dual indication for emergency contraception, giving users greater autonomy and control.

 

With side effects of hormonal birth control ranging from nutrient depletion and depression to breast cancer and stroke, Dr. Johnston believes it’s time for more choices and fewer tradeoffs. “This is about improving reproductive autonomy,” she says. “No one should have to compromise their health to avoid pregnancy.”
