For Tyler, real estate is more than a transaction—it’s about understanding his clients’ unique needs and delivering outcomes that drive success. In this Q&A, he shared how the lessons he learned as a professional athlete have shaped his approach to real estate, his dedication to fostering long-term partnerships, and his passion for making a positive impact—both in the industry and through charitable initiatives.

Tyler, why did you choose a career in real estate after hockey?

Transitioning into real estate felt like a natural progression for me. During my hockey career, I was already investing in properties, which gave me firsthand experience and insight into the industry. Additionally, I had a strong network of family and friends whom I could collaborate with. I saw an opportunity to leverage those relationships and take advantage of that network into my real estate practice, ensuring that my clients benefit from a comprehensive approach to their needs.

In real estate, especially when working with multimillion- and billion-dollar companies, clients expect top-tier representation. They need accurate information, strong negotiation skills, and assurance that they’re getting the best value. Knowing I could leverage my investing experience and trusted connections to help clients achieve their goals made the decision clear.

For me, real estate isn’t just about closing deals—it’s about uncovering and seizing new opportunities. I’ve always believed in making the most of the opportunities that come my way, a mindset that stems from my competitive nature and a drive to succeed. Whether it’s hockey or real estate, I approach every challenge with the belief that no deal is out of reach.

What makes you unique?

My background as a professional hockey player has shaped who I am and how I approach real estate. Traits like accountability, determination, perseverance, and persistence—ingrained in me during my hockey career—continue to drive me today. In a competitive industry like real estate, having a thick skin and not being afraid of rejection is essential. I’ve learned to push forward, knowing that when you put in the time, effort, and hard work, success will follow.

What truly sets me apart, though, is how I invest in understanding my clients. Every client is different, with unique needs, timelines, and goals. I take the time to dive into their business, get to know their requirements, and prove my value by delivering exactly what they need. From day one, I’ve built my career on authenticity and honesty. I never wanted to be the “pushy salesman”—I wanted to be someone my clients could trust, and I believe they respect me for that approach.

I’ve also built a network of trusted professionals, including legal, financial and municipal experts, property specialists, industry specific consultants and insurance providers, who I can bring in to help my clients with their broader needs. For me, it’s about fostering long-term relationships and partnerships, not just closing deals.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is helping clients grow. Seeing a small business establish itself, come back five years later requiring a larger space, and then grow even further is incredibly satisfying. It’s a testament to the trust we’ve built and the value I’ve delivered, and it motivates me to keep making an impact—not just for my clients, but for the community as a whole.

How have the characteristics that drove your hockey career contributed to your success in real estate?

In hockey, collaboration, trust, and mutual support among teammates were essential to achieving goals on the ice. I leaned on teammates I admired, learning from how they prepared and performed. In real estate, I approach my competitors as colleagues. My goal is to build strong working relationships where we can collaborate to create the best outcomes for our clients. I want them to feel comfortable calling me, just as I feel comfortable calling them. It’s about finding that balance—advocating for your client while fostering mutual respect and camaraderie.

I’m also a goal-driven person. In hockey, it wasn’t just about meeting goals but constantly striving to exceed them. That same mindset fuels my real estate career. I’m always looking to adapt, innovate, and think outside the box because no two deals are the same. Markets shift, demographics change, and businesses evolve—whether it’s a CEO passing the company to their children or navigating cultural nuances.

Playing hockey across North America, Europe, and Asia exposed me to diverse cultures, languages, and lifestyles. I immersed myself in each place, learning their customs and perspectives. That experience has been invaluable in real estate, allowing me to connect with clients on a deeper level. It opens doors to new conversations, builds respect, and creates camaraderie with people from all backgrounds.

Ultimately, those lessons from hockey—teamwork, adaptability, cultural awareness, and an unwavering drive to excel—make my work in real estate more rewarding and help me deliver exceptional results for my clients.

You’re also very involved with supporting charities. Can you share a few with us?

I am very fortunate for a supportive family, a nurturing upbringing, and living in a great environment highlights a deep sense of gratitude—something that often inspires a commitment to giving back. We proudly support organizations like the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, CASA Mental Health, Cure Cancer Foundation and the University Hospital Foundation. These causes hold special meaning for us, and we’re committed to helping them make a positive impact in the lives of those they serve.
