Through the leadership of Christopher Anderson, Kyle McCormick, and Chris Nastase, Firefly Solar continues to empower Canadians with reliable, cost-effective solar energy solutions, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. We spoke with them to gain insight into what they’re doing and how they are shaping the future of renewable energy.
What inspired you to start Firefly Solar?
Kyle McCormick: We saw renewable energy flourishing in Europe, Australia, and the U.S., while Canada lagged behind. We recognized an opportunity to invigorate the industry here. Canada is just beginning this journey, and we wanted to be the catalyst that helps renewables reach their full potential. The impact extends beyond just energy—it’s about financial and economic benefits for homeowners, businesses, and farmers, giving them energy independence. Then there’s the environmental impact, creating a greener, more sustainable future. Lastly, we’ve always believed in using business as a force for good. That’s why a portion of our profits goes toward causes—both domestic and international—that align with our commitment to giving back.
Christopher Anderson: Another major motivator was our background as corporate consultants, where the focus was solely on profit. That didn’t sit well with us. We wanted to build something that creates real impact for our communities and our country. Every business we’ve built has been rooted in a commitment to making a difference. It starts at the individual level—helping one homeowner, one business at a time. When we do that, we strengthen communities, provinces, and ultimately, the entire country.
Chris Nastase: Renewable energy has been a lifelong passion of mine, driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on the world. Recognizing the urgent need for widespread adoption, we believed we had the right formula to bring sustainable solutions to our communities. Beyond that, we wanted to challenge ourselves by working in an industry that demands expertise across multiple disciplines. From our engineers and installers to our sales representatives, our goal was to create a collaborative environment where professionals from diverse fields could unite in pursuit of a purpose greater than ourselves.
What sets Firefly Solar apart from the competition?
Kyle McCormick: Our “for-profit for good” philosophy is a core differentiator. People resonate with our mission, and it’s one of the key reasons they choose us over other solar providers. They see that we’re not just selling a product—we’re driving meaningful change.
Christopher Anderson: Many solar companies focus solely on the panels, but we bring extensive roofing and construction expertise into every installation. We evaluate the entire structure—roof integrity, cabling, foundation, and siding—to ensure long-term performance. This holistic approach makes a significant difference in the quality and durability of our systems.
Chris Nastase: We treat every project as if we were installing it for our own family. That means prioritizing simplicity, user-friendliness, and durability to provide the best possible customer experience. By proactively addressing potential issues—like preventing costly roof replacements after installation—we build trust and reinforce the reputation of the solar industry as a whole.
How does Firefly Solar make solar energy more affordable for homeowners?
Kyle McCormick: The current setup with utility providers means homeowners are essentially renting their energy forever. Every month, they pay for electricity they will never own. With solar, that same money is redirected into an asset—one they own outright. The payments have a clear end date, and once the system is paid off, their energy comes directly from their own roof, not from a utility company. This transition creates significant long-term savings while also increasing the value of their home.
What drives you in your work, and what do you enjoy most about it?
Chris Nastase: While delivering an exceptional experience for our customers was a top priority, we were equally committed to creating a rewarding and fulfilling environment for everyone within our company. It’s incredibly inspiring to attract and collaborate with some of the most talented professionals in their fields, working together to make a meaningful impact every day.
Christopher Anderson: The most rewarding part is knowing we’re making a tangible impact every day. We lead from the front, ensuring customer concerns are resolved firsthand. Seeing a homeowner’s skepticism transform into excitement when we activate their system is an incredible feeling. It all comes down to our love for helping people.
Kyle McCormick: Being at the forefront of Canada’s emerging solar industry is exciting, but what truly drives me is the impact we create—environmentally, financially, and within communities. Knowing that what we’re building will outlive us, that we’re setting the direction for an entire industry, is deeply fulfilling. And the best part? Working alongside and serving incredible people every day.
